Forschungszentrum J├╝lich achieved a world record again with fuel cells

Scientists at the Research Center J├╝lich, Germany set a new record for a promising energy technology: Two high-temperature fuel cell stack (stacks) to reach an operating life of 15,000 hours.

Hot candidates for future use in buildings, power plants and vehicles are high-temperature fuel cells with solid electrolyte (Solid oxide fuel cells, SOFCs). They convert chemical energy directly and efficiently into electrical energy – thus they save resources and avoid emissions. Supported by project funds from the EU, were at the Forschungszentrum J├╝lich “stacks” of the Generation 3 up. When in J├╝lich pursued so-called planar technology in these stacks the individual cells stacked to increase voltage to achieve.

Scientists at the Institute for Energy Research (IEF) and the Central Technology Division (ZAT) now have two such stacks, each successfully operated 15,000 hours.Dr. Robert Steinberger-Wilckens says “And they delivered on average a benefit of 0.4 watts per square centimeter, about twice what is currently in commercial systems”, Head of the project “Fuel Cell” at the Research Center. For use in vehicles are already 5,000 to 10,000 hours for a stationary power supply, however, operating times in excess of 40,000 hours is required. Steinberger-Wilckens says “We are the aim of such operating times to realize, once again a good to bit closer”.

“Furthermore, we have the cross-country skiers stacks with relatively low 700 ┬░ C. – this age the cells more slowly,” said Steinberger. The aging or degradation of a fuel cell acts as a gradual loss of power off – similar to batteries. It is worth noting at the J├╝lich stacks that the degradation of the cells on the run so far reached only ten percent. Commonly, the living end of a stack at 20 percent power loss value.

If so, the stacks undisturbed still continue to operate, so in theory they have the potential to create about 30,000 hours – a stack of the type previously unattainable held operating time. Thus they would be for about four years of uninterrupted operation qualifies, if intermittent operation, eg in building heating, the equivalent of a lifetime even five to ten years.

Submarines: Ideal fuel cell vehicle

Fuel cells apparently make a good submarine hard to find. While fuel cell automobiles promise reduced emissions on land, the high seas have long enjoyed a virtual amnesty from air-emission regulations.

An air-independent fuel cell propulsion (AIP) system provides an extreme increase in underwater endurance, increased diving depth and overall efficiency.

The development will push the Hydrogen Bus Alliance. Partners of the merger include the cities of Berlin, Hamburg, London and Madrid. Between 2009 and 2011 counts Melczer because of the twinning with a demand of more than 50 buses, from 2011 to 2013 should be 100 and in the years 2013 to 2015 will be 500 buses.

The U212 combines a conventional diesel generator with a lead acid battery and an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system for silent slow cruising, and a fuel cell equipped with oxygen and hydrogen storage. The system consists of nine PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cells, providing between 30 and 50kW each.

The U214 submarine, still in development, has a displacement of 1,700 tonnes, is 65 metres long and is manned by a crew of 27. The propulsion is again provided by a Siemens Permasyn engine which draws its power supply either from the fuel cells or from batteries which are fed by a diesel generator. Performance of the AIP system has been increased with two Siemens PEM fuel cells, which produce 120kW per module and will give the submarine an underwater endurance of two weeks.

Mercedes-Benz F-CELL Roadster on the Bertha Benz Route

As you may remember, about a month ago we brought you the details of a special concept vehicle known simply as the F-Cell Roadster. The F-Cell’s 1.2 kW (1.63 hp) hybrid drive allows, top speed is low 25 km/h and achieve an operating range of 350 km.
Even if the 250,000 euros well expensive single item is rarely faster than the pace moves – the maximum speed is 25 km/h – has been given to the airy outdoor seating at least as much fun as on board a Mercedes SLK.

Shanghai 2009: Roewe Fuel Cell Electric

In addition to the hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain that we saw the other day, China’s Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC) Roewe.
