The technology of hydrogen storage progressing well!

Vehicles equipped with a fuel cell with hydrogen, under development now, represent a promising alternative! Here’s good news concerning them.

The center of Ripault CEA (The French atomic energy commission) has developed a technology for storing hydrogen which won best European performance. The container in question had posted the best results in terms of durability and safety: it is part of the European project StorHy (Hydrogen Storage Systems for Automotive applications, see article). This technology has been fully realized in polymer composite materials: it could equip future vehicles running on hydrogen.

hydrogen storage progressing
The CEA says that among the various storage technologies embedded studied (solid storage, cryogenic and hyperbaric), experts from the European Commission and representatives of 40 European partners (both industrial and academic) project took stock of 54 months of development dedicated to storage technologies for hydrogen. These tanks, developed in partnership with the manufacturer Ullit, storing hydrogen in gaseous form.

The inner part of the shell (the liner), ensuring the sealing of hydrogen, is made of polymer as an innovative synthesis and processing simultaneously. This technology has been the subject of patents by the CEA and Air Liquide and is licensed to the company ULLIT for its industrialization. As for the external composite hull, it provides resistance and mechanical protection. It is made by filament winding and uses materials from aerospace such as carbon fiber.

CEA stressed that this technology is now the only meet three main criteria from the European specifications for embedded storage to 700 bars:

life: to represent their aging over the life of a vehicle, the ECA reservoirs have proved their resistance to more than 15 000 cycles of filling (20-875 bar) without any significant loss of properties (standard);

sealing the leak rate reservoirs ECA was a minimum 20 times less than the requested value by the standard (1cm3/L/h);

Safety: CEA tanks have demonstrated their resistance to internal pressure above the burst pressure fixed by the standard (1645 bars, almost 2.5 times the pressure of service).

The CEA said that the use of three reservoirs compact, with 3 times 34 liters of internal volume, allows boarding nearly 4.5 kg of hydrogen. This configuration allows you to explore with current technologies autonomy of around 500 km for a family car with a fuel cell PEMFC 70 to 80 kW.

The ECA continues his research within the ANR, of OSEO and the ‘Joint Technology Initiative on hydrogen European: they are intended to accelerate the industrial maturity of such reservoirs and facilitate their integration into a vehicle ( optimization of stored energy densities, establishing connections and sensors for maintenance; adaptability of the shape of the tank to the vehicle; integration into a complete system CAP and lower costs).

DWV looking for the best young scientists from the area of hydrogen and fuel cells

Also for the year 2008 the awards back to the DWV Innovation Award Hydrogen and Fuel Cell to young scientists. The now-established tradition has become an annual award goes to the best Diplom-/Masterarbeit from Germany or dissertation on the subject of energy or hydrogen fuel cells, together with all ancillary areas.

It is the high level of competition, which is in the applications and the excellent work of recent years establish, in any case be kept. John Toepler, chairman of the DWV said:

“Not only the excellent work of recent years, but the other candidates are evidence of a very intensive and successful work at German universities in this field is done. That is the basis that the average consumer will one day also affordable, reliable and environmentally friendly products can buy. “

The exact conditions of participation can be found on our website (left column under the Innovation Award), or we will send them to you on request. The choice among the candidates takes place in early 2009 by a jury of university teachers from the ranks of the association. The handover of prices, coupled with presentations of the prizewinners, is part of the monitoring program of the next Ordinary Meeting of DWV on 12 May 2009 in Wolfsburg.

What is tuned to alternative car drives?

On 6 and 7 November VDI organized together with VW’s session “Innovative vehicle drives” in Dresden. This was about hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells and electric cars. And what came out? When the slogan “plate instead of tank” the flowers dreams of politicians from bio-based fuels wiped off the table, they were quickly two other alternatives at hand, namely hydrogen fuel cells and “of course!” The electric car.

Moreover, the German automotive industry – again, naturally! – The hybrid sleepy, and only Toyota had the ancient idea again to promote daylight. In Dresden brought the speakers all the wonderful ideas of a bright, emission-free car again in the future reality.

That the hybrid drive, combining a combustion engine with an electric drive, in the metropolitan traffic and on short routes and save fuel liquid against electric can enter, we will be known. However, its price, which, although large and expensive cars can be reasonably accommodated, but hardly inexpensive small. It is the savings effect is relatively modest, if not deep into the tricks draw wants. On long-haul, on the other hand, it is indispensable to the combustion engine,
the consumption behavior determined.

The talks in Dresden showed what we could do everything to the electrical part to integrate into the car. Meanwhile, Mercedes presented its first “mild” hybrid in the S 400, which next spring will be offered. Despite the restriction on a minimum of additional parts and a small lithium-ion battery, the electric drive is not allowed, the extra weight is 75 kg. Nevertheless, the reduction in consumption in the NEDC to 7.9 l/100 km for a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine considerably and represents the engineers made an excellent witness.

Los Angeles Auto Show 2008: Kia Borrego FCEV concept

Vehicles with a fuel cell with hydrogen are the stars of green Motorshows worldwide. In the United States, the Los Angeles Auto Show is no exception: the manufacturer Kia will introduce its Kia Borrego FCEV (for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle). The American auto event will take place from 21 to 30 November 2008 (website:

Kia Borrego FCEV
The green SUV concept based on a model Borrego, has a fuel cell developed by the 4th generation Hyundai-Kia (154 hp, 115 kW) and a new battery Lithium-Ion Polymer. He then enjoys an autonomy of 820 km (510 miles) and can start in temperatures of -30o C. Not bad! As part of its testing program, Kia will put on the roads in 2010 a fleet of Kia Borrego FCEV. Clarification: California is developing a network of hydrogen fueling (see article).

An electric quadricycle the Italian Ducati Energia Free the Duck

Small electric quadricycles have not finished surprising us! The Italian Ducati Energia, which specializes in electronic components, has launched an electric quadricycle called Free Duck. It is equipped with two engines 2 kW placed in its rear wheels and 8 lead batteries (12V – 42Ah). It then displays a range of 50 km. Its peak speed is 45 km/h. It can carry up to 200 kg of goods.
Free Duck
The Ducati Energia Free Duck is also available in hybrid version rechargeable: it then has a heat engine that takes over when the batteries are discharged: it enjoys an autonomy up to 200 km. It was built in Bologna (Italy) and was introduced into the Italian market. Its price 6 000 euros HT for the electric model and 7 000 HT for that hybrid. Ducati Energia has not yet specified if ecological landing gear that one day in France. Thus Listmania!

Clarification: the structure of the Free Duck is also compatible with future developments relating to the use of alternative fuels (natural gas, LPG, methane) or with the use of new technologies such as fuel cell with hydrogen.
