If you’re ready to move on to the greener pastures of fuel cell technology, geography is the single biggest factor limiting your ability to drive a hydrogen-powered vehicle. Although no fuel-cell vehicles are available for sale at this time, a handful of auto manufacturers have opened their hydrogen-testing programs to the public. But it’s not an open-door policy; you have to qualify.

It is well known, great minds think alike. But we’ve still been surprised to see such mimicry in the presentation in 4 different brands as Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes and Toyota. What attracted her 4 manufacturers, that reasoning, a finding that the battery-electric propulsion is adequate for small urban cars, but electric propulsion with fuel cells is much more appropriate, even essential, for the larger cars, for family use, for which we expect more performance and autonomy

It was at the Geneva Motor Show. Honda Jazz exposed his power, and required its FCX Clarity. At Hyundai, there was an electric version of the I10, and a version of hydrogen Ix35. Mercedes, was a Class A electric batteries, was a Class B electric fuel cell. Toyota finally, the small Iq was electric, while the main FCHV-adv was hydrogen. Our illustrations are in order. So why, why hydrogen rather than batteries, for four reasons. The first 2 are the performance and autonomy, and superiority of the hydrogen is indisputable.

Car makers typically partner with universities, commercial fleets, or government agencies to get feedback on their technology platforms while working out the bugs. These organizations often have access to private hydrogen gas refueling stations, and can provide rigorous testing by racking up serious mileage in a short period of time. However, Honda, Mercedes, and GM are also letting average consumers test their products in the real world before they go to market. But before you raise your hand to sign up for these prototype vehicles, keep in mind that you may not be geographically desirable.

Honda FCX Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle
Honda has been leasing its FCX Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle since 2008, and so far has handed over the keys of these hydrogen-powered cars to 26 customers in California. Drivers pay $600 per month to lease the four-seater from Honda, with all maintenance and hydrogen gas included. There’s also no mileage restriction, which means you can drive the FCX Clarity as far and as often as you want–so long as you’re within access to a hydrogen-refueling station.

The FCX Clarity has an approximate 240-mile driving range, and the 135-horsepowerr car has a top speed of 100 mph. Customers interested in leasing the fuel-cell vehicle can sign up for updates on Honda’s Web site. Although the manufacturer has closed its first round of vehicle leases, Honda plans to release a significant number of FCXs in its next fiscal year. Proximity to several fueling stations (and at least one that is open 24 hours) plays a significant role in determining how Honda selects its program participants. For the moment, that limits applicants to Torrance, Santa Monica, and Irvine, California.

Mercedes B-Class F-CELL
Mercedes delivered its first hydrogen-powered B-Class F-Cell to a customer in Southern California this year, and since then has handed over the keys to 14 additional F-Cells. The 136-horsepower F-Cell has a top speed of 106 mph and delivers an estimated range of 190-240 miles, depending on which fuel cycle test you’re using. Customers lease the four-seater directly from Mercedes, paying $850 per month for a two-year lease–a steep price. But on the upside, all maintenance and hydrogen fuel is included in the lease. With gasoline prices rising, the free compressed hydrogen gas makes the F-Cell seem lightly less outrageously priced. The carmaker is accepting applications on its Web site from drivers wishing to fill one of the remaining 55 spots in its hydrogen test program. However, applicants need to live in the Los Angeles or San Francisco Bay Area to qualify.

Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell
After wrapping up Project Driveway last year with more than 2,000,000 miles collectively clocked during the three year program, GM will launch the next stage of its fuel cell vehicle-testing program in Hawaii. GM will be working with government agencies and corporate fleets to put the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell through the paces for more intense testing of its technology platform (think postal-delivery services and taxis). But the carmaker also plans on to let take the fuel cell vehicles for a spin. GM has never formally leased its fuel cell vehicles to customers, preferring to loan its fuel cell SUVs for periods of a few days, weeks, or months. It will be conducting the similar short-term test-drives throughout Hawaii, and the Web site promoting the new program should launch in the next three months. The best part of GM’s program is that it’s free–if you qualify.

Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid in the United States was released in 2007. U.S. General Motors (GM) and Germany’s DaimlerChrysler AG, Germany’s BMW co-developed “2 MODOHAIBURIDDOSHISUTEMU” drive. The origin of the name, for low-speed driving and high speed for the two modes are prepared.

Toyota “Prius”, such as single-mode hybrid vehicle, the engine and motor power output to match it to be significant, the motor vehicle exhaust and a large amount of. The two-mode hybrid for a high-speed mode to reduce the burden of the motor, the amount of exhaust of motor vehicles used in a compact, lightweight and compact system can have an advantage.

Mercedes-Benz’s midsize SUV “ML 450 HYBRID” with a two-mode hybrid, will be released in 2009. The 2008 Detroit show, BMW also equipped with the system of mid-size SUV based on “concept X6 ActiveHybrid” with displays will be put into practical use during 2009, he said. Models look at the two-mode hybrid midsize car to a heavy weight in the car suitable for large-scale systems.

Breakthroughs should be a lot of challenges in the future given the mobility of cars on the undoubtedly important. So Nissan is currently developing a test ride in the X-TRAIL FCV, including infrastructure, tried to track issues.

The dawn of the now departed FCV ceremony methanol reformer
In 1996, Nissan to develop fuel cell vehicles will start in earnest. Until then, the concept was announced and the technical, but the real action FCV cars of the 1990s as a starting point to say. In 1999 and started testing the vehicle. At the time, followed by financial difficulties have been developed in the MENAKATTA still in the development of the technology to determine the future of survival were considered.
RUNESSA vehicle at the time of the FCV based on the difference between now and reforming methanol fuel cells for expression.Quashi reforming methanol extract hydrogen fuel cells, how to use it, many automobile manufacturers Tricor. However, this method should present the FCV has almost disappeared. That improved technology Quashi difficult to extract hydrogen, and that will take time to start the neck. Quick-start the car and asked KAKAWA were successful, removing hydrogen reforming the Quashi, I would have been a time lag.

The United States in April 2001 and based in Sacramento, California, the highway has started running experiments.

V-shaped recovery and the birth of the X-TRAIL FCV

In 2002 the Japanese government and, finally, FCV to a full-fledged research and development, conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry JHFC (Japan Hydrogen & FYUERUSERU demonstration project) started. Nissan also participate in JHFG course, the same year in December, leading to the current X-TRAIL FCV FCV to have been born. The products and technologies, recycling and environmental protection efforts of the mid-term environmental action plan decided, “Nissan Green Program 2005″ was because of the backing. Return liquid to gaseous hydrogen, and up to 350 compressed air pressure in the process lost 20 out of a few percent. These losses will have to lose. And the station also important to reduce construction costs. The use of hydrogen in a variety of laws and regulations or not, and the result has been a rise in costs by 2015 the construction of hydrogen filling stations to reduce costs to 200 million yen is the goal. The current gas station construction in tens of millions of yen compared to, it still shows a high hurdle.
Another important how the hydrogen is produced. FCV is the ultimate eco-car, but creating hydrogen from fossil fuels are not a true Eco. Such as solar and wind power generation using renewable energy to produce hydrogen is not required. Of course, in a period of transition from fossil fuels to produce hydrogen that could have no choice but to use renewable energy in the future it will be necessary. The ultimate in solar cells and wind power and hydrogen to create a self-generating, private cars and hydrogen filling (filling).

Nissan FCV will be the next generation?

This year, the first time in eight years in Japan summit was held (Summit). The 34th Summit, July 7-9held in Hokkaido, but the auto manufacturers to environment-related technology and a series of new fuel-cell vehicles in the announcement. Nissan X-TRAIL and clean-diesel is sent to the, FCV did not talk about.
After about a month from the summit on August 6, announced the new fuel cell stack, and at the same time in 2010 and to introduce a new hybrid electric vehicles (rear-wheel drive), has announced a new lithium-ion batteries. After a month on September 5, the world’s first SHIRIKONKABAITO (SiC) devices for use in vehicles has to barter. EV FCV as well as a series of related technology has advanced. In particular, the conventional fuel cell separators made of carbon change from the thin metal of the performance. The volume of the stack from the traditional 90L and 68L and the much smaller, 90kW output from 130kW to improve rapidly. In addition, the amount of platinum used in 1 / 2 and at the same time to reduce the durability of catalyst is also increasing. It’s worth noting the future, this new stack and a new lithium-ion batteries, SHIRIKONKABAITO (SiC) devices used in the inverter, is the introduction of next-generation FCV.
FCV is currently based on the next generation of Nissan cars and has been selected to stage in the near future with new models such as the stack is likely to appear. A stack of high-performance X-TRAIL than that of a large vehicle that can be used, so the introduction of the new Murano FCV may be. FCV still in the research phase, but the turning point in 2015. The hydrogen station in 2015 to move to a commercial phase.

The Japanese manufacturer Suzuki swinging a green card in the World 2008: it sets its prototype called SX4-FCV (5 seats), a car with a fuel cell with hydrogen (108 kW ch/80) it developed with the U.S. manufacturer General Motors. In June 2008, he received permission from the Japanese Ministry of Transport (Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT)) test on Japanese roads this innovative green vehicle. The objective of this test drive: collect data on vehicle technologies and study the influence of traffic conditions and driving.

The technical characteristics of the Suzuki SX4-FCV are as follows. It has a reservoir hydrogen under high pressure (70MPa). Its electric motor develops a power of 68 kW. Its supercapacitors capture energy from regenerative braking. The SX4-FCV enjoy an autonomy of 250 km and a speed of 150 km / h. Its measurements? 4190 x 1730 x 1585 mm and a wheelbase of 2,500 mm. For comparison, it is still far from the performance of Nissan X-Trail FCV equipped with a fuel cell with hydrogen, with an autonomy of 500 km (see article).

Conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstration Project (JHFC) this week, and fuel cell vehicles (FCV) tank of the vehicle twice the previous 70MPa (700 atmospheric pressure) of hydrogen filling station for hydrogen-operation And in the press and public facilities. The pressure of 70MPa hydrogen storage, FCV is one of the practical application of a range of issues, the level of gasoline in cars and decompression is an effective way. The operation of the station, hydrogen filling a variety of procedures and cost, safety, energy efficiency, such as data acquisition and for the purpose of the demonstration will continue a two-year period.

Also, according 70MPa FCV hydrogen storage system with the start of the demonstration, showing that the vehicles. A range of highway running to determine the effect of the extension, and fuel economy that will be measured. Will be subject to testing, FCHV-adv. (Toyota) / X-TRAIL FCV (Nissan) / SX4-FCV (Suzuki) in the three models, each manufacturer will have a range of more than 830km/500km about / 250km and.

FCV and the 70MPa hydrogen station and the U.S. are underway in Germany, GM and Daimler-70MPa FCV and the running of public roads. Also, in Japan FCCJ (Council for the Promotion of practical application of fuel cells), recent domestic and foreign automobile manufacturers in the domestic energy companies under the agreement, “fuel-cell vehicles and hydrogen filling stations to popularize business in 2015 and started full-scale” Has announced that scenario, 70MPa, and one of the first important step is.

Demonstration was held to 12, 2007 at the start of the project is implemented, Niiti Tomuro Association for the Promotion of Engineering, and he Shiyougo Watanabe of Japan Automobile Research Institute to the press before presenting a summary trial. Among the main test of a hydrogen station in charge of the said, “70MPa to be filled, 35MPa was not required in the need to be devised. For example, is filled with hydrogen and a fast rise in temperature. 70MPa goal Value in three minutes or five minutes trying to fill this need for cooling and energy, FCV well to wheel of a decline in energy efficiency. Future, ECV when the spread of the automobile Mitigation of environmental impact in order to fulfill the role that the tank production in the refrigerant temperature and the amount of energy consumed by data measured, the extended-range, FCV and the balance of convenience must be verified “, Explained the purpose of testing.
